Not exactly what I wanted from Barry Jenkins, but I guess everybody deserves to get the big bag. Plus my family and I were the only ones in the theatre so that was a good time.
I’m reading a book at the moment called The Practice of Not Thinking, and in the section I’m currently on, it outlines how there’s a big difference between actively seeing and passively looking. Nickel Boys’ attempt to help us actively see what and how these characters see and experience their world is truly a small filmmaking miracle. While I don’t think the formal choice worked at all times, I was more than happy to see the narrative come through and become more than just an incredibly artful experiment.
