  laser focused endorphin rush filmmaking. does it matter that i don’t usually enjoy musicals? i don’t think it should. its cool that sometimes this movie slaps me in the face and reminds me that i should be miserable. i don’t mind. do it more. why should they be happy? they don’t even exist. i guess they do in spirit. broken dreams are everywhere. realised dreams are everywhere. we all live in a big dream. i like that they saved the up montage…

  baz lurhmann’s take on “walk hard: the dewey cox story” is absolutely unhinged. he knows writers who use subtext, and they’re all cowards. he knows editors who understand pacing & can cut together coherent sequences but they’re also cowards. no one knows what tom hanks is going for here, especially not tom hanks. but austin butler? he makes this film. i never expected to find parts of this film genuinely moving, but when it is, it's his performance that provides substance to what would otherwise be an overwhelmingly stylised 160-minute long music video
