a film about the leaden dread of the inexpressibility of desire and its consequences should be leaden and heavy with dread, yes, but this film about how the spirit crushed by this force on the physical / social / paranormal levels all at once seems lacking of the soul at the centre. with a few exceptions, the tragic, as you search for it, is rendered mainly -- through score, dialogue, pacing, lighting, you name it -- as a distant echo of a gothic problem. mission accomplished? but weird take, go back to herzog and murnau
