No movie better represents the nihilism of the 90s.
    All the irony is tiring.

Absurd and unpredictable from beginning until the very end. Despite being billed as a comedy, it's more of an upbeat horror story if you empathize with the titular character, John Malkovich. While ostensibly existential, the film never actually discusses what it means to be another person, only that it is thrilling. The characters are all unlikable. Directing, editing, cinematography, casting, etc. was all average so nothing really redeemed this from mediocrity for me personally. A very interesting plot that takes the audience for a rollercoaster ride but is ultimately a shallow thrill.

War is the ultimate extension of a state's legitimacy. It is when you really see what a nation is all about. At the heart of this movie are the lies of the Vietnam War; the farce of the whole damn thing. You see the Americans commit atrocity after atrocity for as trivial a reason as wanting a good surf spot. And America was complicit in all of this simply to maintain capitalism and garner economic concessions favoring American businesses in Southeast Asia. It's a joke but no one is laughing. I feel gross after this movie ended. I need to take a shower.
