Scarlet Street 1945
Chris Cross is one of the sadder film noir protagonists because he's just an aging nobody that wants to feel the love of a beautiful woman again. The scene where Kitty basically makes him her bitch by forcing him to paint her toenails is just painful to watch. And the ending is classic! This is everything that noir should be.
I really enjoyed this sad, dark, and tragic little noir. Eddie G. plays sad sap Chris Cross who gets more…

The Hitch-Hiker 1953
This is back during that time when Ida Lupino didn’t give a fuck and just did whatever the hell she wanted, making movies with her homies and her ex-husband using barebones budgets and two-week shoots. And doing it all with style and a great eye. She’s the grandma of American indie filmmaking.

Call Me by Your Name 2017
Set during a fascinatingly horny Italian summer, the film never fully took off for me until the last 15 minutes, with its remarkable monologue and a final shot that you can’t turn away from.

“I’d forgotten what it was like to have self-respect.”
Van Heflin plays a cop named Webb who answers a call from a married woman about a peeping tom then proceeds to seduce her. I loved how there was never any question about Webb’s nature throughout, no plot twists suddenly revealing his true intentions; he’s just a creep narcissist from the start, a dirty dog who dick-whips this poor lady and toys with her. It was a bit uncomfortable watching all of this go down…but hey, that’s my kinda noir!

Ferrari 2023
It’s mindblowing that the visionary director that made Heat, The Insider, and Collateral can make something so dull and utterly lifeless. I swear, it feels like Penelope Cruz is the only thing awake in this movie, as she tries like hell (especially near the end) to save this tepid affair.

Heat 1995
One of the greatest crime pictures of all time and one of my favorite movies. Great writing with so many masterful scenes. The movie stands out amongst the others because it is less concerned with cops and robbers, heists and action scenes (even though they are still meticulously crafted) and more concerned with the characters and how the cop and robber are more alike than you think, their dedication to both of their jobs takes a toll on their personal lives. It's a real credit to the, the writing, directing, and the acting that we truly root for both of them to win.
