First of all, if Maximus had declared his allegiance to Commodus at the beginning of the movie, if he had loved Commodus a little bit, none of this would have happened. Anyway, Maximus had no interest in becoming emperor, you would have laughed at Commodus, you would have gone to your village and spent time with your family.
It was already ridiculous that the emperor would pay someone to come to the arena to fight Maximus (like a slave) instead of having him killed. He died because of his ego. Apart from this and other absurdities (such unrealistic script mistakes), I liked the movie in general.
