  Notes on a Scandal 2006

  All I knew about this before I watched it was that it was lesbophobic camp starring Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench and that Cate hisses “Do you wanna FUCK mE Barbara????” and that was more than enough to sell me. Having watched it, I know way more and I love what I know, but my big takeaway is still “Do you wanna FUCK ME Barbara????”  

  This is Cate Blanchett’s straightest role but she did it in a gay movie where she’s also a sex predator named Bathsheba. Stunning.

  The middle section (from when the guys show up at the house through the court scene) is so fucking good, but the first 45 minutes are literally nothing and the ending is infuriating. That middle section is so much fun that I cannot possibly say I didn’t like this movie, but did I??

  No matter how hard I try to hate Catholicism, I just keep coming back to how gay it is — whether it likes it or not.❤️ The politics of this movie are obviously totally insane but, like, the gowns!!! The marble! The intrigue! Isabella Rossellini! Evil vaping cardinal!! 

  The sound design is particularly excellent — all that anxious heavy breathing. When the wax seal broke, it was dead silent in the theater and a lone woman gasped in a way that really underlined how effective the movie is at making every moment feel wildly portentous.

  I cannot believe this was worse than I thought it would be. That seems completely impossible. 

  Selena, baby, I love you — Sin notas porque no es tu culpa. I know you can’t read that my sweet angel but that’s okay.
