True Grit 2010
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
As always, the Coens are much more entertaining when they're being serious. It's the reverse of the Spielberg rule (his "throwaway" films are normally much more profound than the worthy stuff). A lot of fun is had with the archaic language. Rooster Cogburn is one of those unsquashable, almost immortal figures: he's so powerful that it takes a quarter-century time jump to kill the old man off in the end.

I Want Your Love 2012
Mumblecore down to its mumbliest, mumbliest core. Even at 75 minutes, this film outstays its welcome. No real characters, no plot, no directorial flourishes - we just see naked bodies sliding against each other, in and out of focus, for an hour and a bit.

Metropolis 1927
Some iconic images held together by a wafer-thin plot and with no real weighty ideas or memorable characters. Freder Frederson may be the least magnetic lead in the history of cinema.
