Raising Arizona 1987
Introduced to a group of college students at the second annual “RUFun classic movie night with Gavin.” They seemed to mostly enjoy it. There were a number of moments I was cackling alone but I think that’s due to me having lived with this film for almost 30 years as well as the Coens’ comedies often get better and better upon rewatch.
It occurred to me this viewing that they essentially do the entire first act in the opening 10…

Of Gods and Men 2010
That rare movie which depicts religious faith as something that is not only real and reasonable but beautiful as well. It's a simple yet bold movie that's not afraid to test your patience (consider how much time we spend just watching the monks sing together in their daily worship). As a pastor, I feel like there is a lot to be learned from watching these monks love their Muslim neighbors. The Last Supper/Swan Lake scene near the end might be one of my favorite scenes from a movie ever. Love and hope in the face of death. "Remember that love is eternal hope."
