Rewatching the shining I was initially disappointed in myself that I gave this film a four. I previously felt it was missing meaning and was a bit of a mess. However on my return almost a year on I realize what I missed but also how my understanding of films has improved.
This is an absolute masterpiece - the cinematography and it's ability to evoke feelings of frustration, anxiety and fear are spectacular. There's constant intrigue but also an inevitability…
Elements of this I thought were top top tier but kind of fell flat on its face in the third act for me. Probably the most frightening lynch movie i've seen. Some interesting themes of prostitution, abuse, sex and family but not tied together for a satisfying conclusion. This is David lynch's way but he has done it in mulholland drive so I thought he could do it here but he didn't. Oh well it was stylistic as hell and thoroughly entertaining.
