    loved so much about this. the warmth emanating throughout, the way the camera was so alive and warm in many of the shots, the liveliness of the editing and the soundtrack, the amount of empathy overflowing from the performances. really really lovely, I didn’t want it to end. Can’t wait to check out more of Mike Mills’ work.

    Obviously an important point in Spielberg’s development towards more “serious” dramatic fare—he still hasn’t fully figured it out here but I just can’t deny his natural ability on display. Lots of great sequences with moments that lull in between. Bale is really good throughout though—another prime example of how Spielberg is great with child actors.

    I don't understand how this is "bold" or "audacious" or "a swing"--it's flashy I guess, but nothing we haven't seen before in better films. hell, there are several moments where it almost seems ashamed to be a musical (though it's understandable when the songs are mostly unremarkable).

    there's a lot to be said about the regressive elements here (I have A LOT of feelings about the portrayal of transness here) but at the end of the day the biggest sin…
