The Pacific 2010
The core theme of Steven Spielberg's and Tom Hanks' WWII outings (a franchise of sorts?) is best summarized by the dying words of Hanks' character in Saving Private Ryan: "Earn this." These films, miniseries, and video games implore the viewer to acknowledge and consider the sacrifices and hardships endured by the veterans of WWII on their behalf.

September 5 2024
For the best, September 5 avoids too much thematic or political meandering to deliver a gripping and taut new angle on a great tragedy. It sets the scene concisely from the get-go and gives us fascinating insight into the processes of broadcast media in the analog age. Wasn’t expecting much from this one but left quite impressed.
