    Anora

    ★★★★½

This one, for me at least, was very reminiscent of Hot Summer Nights and Boogie Nights, with all three having this inexplicable, fast-paced hum to its pacing. Although ending up to be a failed romance, the movie is an excellent case study into the fleeting experiences of youth and grappling with having to come to terms with maturity. Mikey Madison, who just won the flipping Best Actress award, gives an electrifying performance as Anora, a stripper at high end club…

    Dìdi (弟弟)

    ★★★★★

Dìdi (弟弟) displays the hardships and growing pains of boyhood as Chris (Izaac Wang) struggles with friendship, family, and the unfairness of life. Although the film is heartfelt and funny, it’s also solemn in its exploration of relationships with peers as a young teen. Set in 2008 and on par with the skater flick “Mid-90s”, Dìdi encapsulates the early era of social media and the impressionability of being a kid. All this to say that this one was fantastic, and there’s Mandarin spoken throughout the whole movie too (even better). 太好了电影。

    Nosferatu

    ★★★★½

Nosferatu caps off the 2024 movie season with a breathtakingly shot and intense masterpiece from Robert Eggers, who I’m beginning to think is the Wes Anderson of horror movies with the way each scene is framed and shot. It’s hard to put into words why this movie resonated with me so much, but its dark and grim atmosphere, its storybook-esque vibe, and pacing that almost feels like a callback to classic horror movies like Frankenstein or Creature from the Black…

    Smile 2

    ★★★½

Stylistically shot and packed with enough jump scares and gore to make your heart rate go through the roof, Smile 2 is a pleasing sequel to its innovative predecessor. Actress Naomi Scott (Skye Riley in the film) does an amazing job as the lead role, giving a believable performance as the movie’s lead, portraying a distraught and conflicted Pop singer who is returning to the spotlight after a year of substance and physical rehab from a car accident that killed…
