    Subtle, understated and yet poignant. Chris Pine's Robert the Bruce isn't the swashbuckling hollywood hero we're used to seeing in historical war movies; he is quiet, he is flawed, he is a freedom fighter and he is a father. His gentle masculinity moved me profoundly.

    The scene where Elizabeth prays, "amen", and then we see Robert praying as well, and he blows out the candle on the eve of war, and morning touches the spiderwebs.... goodness me the cinematography in this movie is breathtaking!

    Do people on letterboxd not understand that this is an "origin story" type of movie? It even says so at the very end, "And so the legend begins". Also... why is everyone saying this is boring?! It's so much fun!

    Baz Luhrmann does it again! His storytelling never fails to take my breath away. The editing is particularly interesting, and the cinematography makes me want to weep with joy. The use of Elvis' music in this is simply stunning. Like with most Luhrmann movies, the soundtrack is a character and has a life of its own.
