The beginning of this movie is a little on the nose but it’ll still go over the heads of the group it’s poking fun at.
Bong Joon Ho’s movies always have social commentary to make. This is no different. Watching the film, I’m reminded of events and themes that have repeated in our history: the idea of castes, colonization, cultural superiority, experimenting on people considered subhuman, fascism… it’s all there.

The journey was great but I didn’t care for the destination (the epilogue)…
What’s great about the film is how it highlights the struggle of being a first generation immigrant in a country that tells you time and time again that ‘you are not wanted here.’ The film isn’t in your face about it either. It’s subtle but you see it throughout the film if you’re paying attention.
I appreciate seeing this on the big screen now at a time when anti-immigration viewpoints are becoming mainstream.
