Stagecoach 1939
Holds up well as an 85-year old staple of the westerns (Except for the racism). Didn't blow me away either, might be a film I slightly appreciate more than enjoy but still excited to check out more classics from the genre. Thomas Mitchell is great!

Captures Paris with such ooze and aesthetic that I almost forgot what a shithole it is in real life.
Genuinely tho, masterfully shot and directed. Might be my favorite French New Wave film I've seen up until now (Consider me on board the Truffault-train, Godard will have to wait). Expresses the trapped feeling of misunderstanding with great sincerity.

Pickpocket 1959
There's something oddly comforting in the way Pickpocket portrays acts of thievery. Being my second film from Bresson, I still adore its simplicity just as much since I saw 'A Man Escaped' more than a year ago and it's probably just as good! On the surface, the director's extreme acts of minimalism in storyline and dialogue may be offputting but there's an incredible amount to appreciate in the details.

As a species, we need to preserve Mike Leigh at all costs because what a director and treasure of a person this man is! He never fails to strike the perfect balance between bittersweet reality and hopeful forthcoming with this film being no exception.
