  This film should not be considered a documentary. Bendejelloul constructed a narrative despite the facts for international consumption. He falsely connects it to the grand narrative of apartheid. The point is repeatedly made that Rodriguez fans were generally anti-establishment. This is farfetched. Rodriguez was considered more like a conservative artist among progressive cells.

  Another inaccuracy in the documentary is the mythologized performance at his arrival in SA. The truth is however far from how it got depicted in this documentary.…
