  Bruno v Tyson 2021

  Wannabe Frank Bruno documentary that just couldn’t duck Tyson, no matter how many films have been made about Iron Mike. Felt like the result sucked air out of some bigger things - especially Bruno’s mental health battles, which didn’t only start at retirement (he’s said he smoked cannabis after fights “to calm down”. Not that the doc touched on that.)

  It all paves the way to a fairly sad, incoherent meeting between the two in the final rounds. Lost count…

  Watched at Curzon Soho, as part of the BFI London Film Festival, with a lively crowd - including Reggie Yates, some interviewees from the film, the director and producers. Totally charming, family-style love-in at the Q&A afterwards around a totally charming director, Yemi Bamiro, who totally deserved it.

  The film itself did a top job of mining AFCON, World Cup and Olympics tournament archives, on pitch and off pitch, with a lovely balance of characters amongst the talking heads. A…
