  when you watch this film a second time, having forgotten just enough that it feels fresh, but remembering just enough that you notice all the nuances you didn’t notice the first time round…. so freaking GOOD

  the boy and the heron encapsulates many beloved ghibli elements: beautiful animation complemented by an emotive score (god bless u joe hisaishi), a protagonist's transformative journey, adorable little creatures, a fresh take on traditional hero-villain dynamics… (i could go on). yet, these qualities do not equate to predictability, but rather a comforting nostalgia that elevates the viewing experience.

  miyazaki proves he is a master auteur through his ability to deliver the ghibli magic we crave whilst providing a distinct, innovative film each time; the boy and the heron is no exception. i don’t want to reveal too much, but be prepared to enjoy yet another masterpiece.
