Boxing Helena 1993
Cried twice. What started as thudding and literal quickly developed into a melodramatic portrait of a way people can learn to love, and the consequences entailed therein. In a twist we see this mindset solidified in a life where even when you’re on top you dream of being the loser. Finally, your dreams inspire inaction in your world. Reject reality at all turns, turn to the statue. There’s no way out when there’s no way out.

Nowhere 1997
Just like his shoegaze soundtracks, Araki moseys through lush hangout scenes with a warm, dreamlike quality. At the same time, under the surface, the water begins to boil over into noisy, chaotic madness, with shocking visual force to match. Then, just as quickly and all at once, it drifts back into a strange and uncertain calm. This LA Weird has never been this fun. Araki films are so jam packed. I can’t wait to watch this again.
