Everything you hear is true. This is a film that could just as well grab fans of contemporary independent horror as fans of the original series. It pays its dues to Raimi (back when -he- used to make good films) in its unsubtle ways, but tells a decent gore fest of a story along the way. It's fun --- Bruce Campbell gets a voice cameo!

Joe Versus the Volcano 1990
The last 15-minutes are bizarrely insensitive to Polynesian culture, but the rest of the film is great! Tom Hanks is doing classic Tom Hanks, but more so; like he achieved the ultimate combo of incorrigible, charming everyman and introspective hero here and never again.
