With a lack of depth or complexity, no explanation of stakes, an indistinguishable villain, and a very forgettable soundtrack, Moana 2 made me leave the theater wondering, “Did I just watch half a movie?”

I’m very open about my general distaste for modern musicals, so going in, I knew practically nothing about the story of Wicked beyond the fact that it’s essentially the origin story of the witches in The Wizard of Oz.
The plot of Wicked is one of the most ingenious, sentimental, fun pieces of creative writing I’ve ever seen, full of rich characters, vibrant emotionality, simultaneously heart-warming and heart-wrenching.
