Tried as I did to re-watch Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups with a more open mind, I still could not get past the at times laughably over the top pretentious style. While this film certainly has an interesting, fragmented style that Malick has been dedicating the latter part of his career on, but this one just does not have a compelling story to back it up, and becomes increasingly bizarre in it's at times disorienting barrage of images, memories and…

The Wolf of Wall Street 2013
"You know, when you sail on a boat fit for a Bond villian, sometimes you need to play the part, right?"
This quote taking from a riveting scene around halfway mark of the film, perfectly sums up the absolute insanity of this film.
While I can understand that some will find the absurd excess of this film distasteful, The Wolf of Wall Street is Scorsese firing on all cylinders creating a lurid epic chronicling the grotesque debauchery of Jordan Belfort…

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera 2025
A very different beast to the first film, but ultimately it was a really entertaining European heist caper with very slick direction and a couple of great set-pieces. Doesn't have the same Heat for dirtbags vibes of the first but I appreciate that it was doing something different. I will be there to see a third film if it ever eventuates!

Nightcrawler 2014
A very darkly funny piece of work exploring the moral vacuity and desperation of the tabloid media, with Gyllenhaal truly inhabiting the role of Lou Bloom, one of the most fantastically despicable sociopaths in recent film history, in what will certainly go down as one the best roles in an impressive filmography.
This is a case in which a physical transformation on the actor's part truly adds to the character, Gyllenhaal's gaunt, wiry figure immediately sets you at unease, his…
