My favorite kind of sci-fi movie that doesn’t sacrifice heart and humanity for interplanetary terror and awe. Humanity is the unlikely core in a film about aliens, where special effects take a backseat to funny and heartstring tugging characters. With this movie, Joon-ho proves that you can simultaneously be a sicko and a softie. Can we have more of these??

Only qualm is the heavy handed trumpiness. Im tired of him as is without also seeing him at the movies.

This movie was unsettling from the first minute to the last. David Lynch is a master at using music to make a visually mellow moment into a deeply disturbing one.

This is the third film of his I’ve seen and I’ve finally accepted that some things just won’t make sense to me, which makes for a more enjoyable watching experience.

Also noticing he loves the dichotomy of a vampy brunette and a literal girl-next-door blonde.

Watching this movie, I was awestruck by the beautiful colors and landscape of rural Texas, and how it served as a reflection of Trav (bleak, quiet, lonely). This observation of “Americana” felt distinctly European - as if the Romanticizing of this landscape could only be done by an outside observer.

I’ll be thinking about Trav and Jane, and the breakdown of a doomed relationship with so much love and even more pain, for a long time.

The first three times I tried to watch this movie, I fell asleep. I think that says something about the cozy magic of Miyazaki’s worlds. One of my favorite things about his films is the grace he extends to the children characters, in all their many moods or stages of life. He truly understands the trials, tribulations and pure bliss of childhood - something most of us forget about in the throes of adulthood.

During the more perilous moments of movie like the storm, I found the playful soundtrack comforting, reminding me that there was never any real danger.
