Wow, just wow. This is everything I had hoped Citizen Kane would be. The first great film. I'm incredulous as to how this was released in the first years of sound in pictures. The dialogue is superb. It starts off with ceaselessly engaging plotting, the complexity of which is astounding for the time. It marches on with spellbinding thrills as we close in on the subject. And the conclusion is simply beautiful. One of the best speeches by a vilain…

Wow! Who would've thought that Mahou Shoujo could go this hard?! This has some of the oddest writing of any show. Throughout most of its runtime, I was left wondering how it can have such excellent storytelling yet such perfunctory plotting. It has intricate character arcs that truly enthrall and concurrently copious use of elementary plot devices (Homura ex machina). Funny from the get-go. Thank god Chris didn’t end up sounding like a retarded jock.

An interesting and unique film that’s, in essence, an exercise in meta layering. The setup is most assuredly worth it, yet it’s also what’s keeping it from being great. An odd affair. The first 65 minutes closely resemble a banal movie that ostensibly leads nowhere. Thankfully, the last 30 minutes more than compensate. They’re exceptional, arresting, and surprisingly fun. The ending is sweet too—unexpectedly poignant. I loved observing the creative process and—in this case—its extemporaneity.

I'd forgotten just how abysmal Mirai Nikki was. This doesn't even deserve an analysis.
If you're considering watching this series, do it for the cringe.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion 1997
Incredible pulchritude. Felt illimitable weight borne by every scene. An existential journey. The need to accept a repugnant subsistence you groped for and cannot elude. The pain of the irrevocable. The beauty of grandiosity. A magnum opus.
