The Virgin Spring 1960
Apparently based on a medieval Swedish story, it kind of takes your breath away when you think of audiences watching it in 1960. The rape is particularly horrific with no musical score underneath, ditto the retribution that follows, yet not a tinge of exploitation. Almost like a gothic horror film ala Ingmar Bergman.

Wanted to watch this film for a long time. Finally got the chance and was delighted. Dripping with irony, filled with people who endlessly feign pretense, lie to each other, the world, and themselves, just like real life. I loved it.

One of the greatest American Films of all time! Still works impeccably and, I believe, always will. Try to look away. Try to pigeonhole it. A character study with zero pretenses. Once watched, it will never leave you.
