A deeply unsettling film. The Brutalist does not merely show radically transfigured space and movement as the index of twentieth century metropolitan America, but presents verticality as its overarching image. Portrayals of height were excellent (Italian mountain sequence was a fave) but these images proliferate in inverse proportion to any real sense of joy and hope in the film. Far more strange, sublime and dark than expected.
