    The Power of the Dog

This film is the definition of a slow-burn with a brilliantly satisfying pay-off. Despite starting slow, the cinematography and beautifully framed shots, coupled with Johnny Greenwood’s menacing soundtrack build tension unlike any film I’ve seen in recent years. Performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Kodi-Smit McPhee ground the film and heighten the tension of the established world. I’m not a fan of musicals but Andrew Garfields performance in this is nothing short of captivating brilliance. The story is a whirlwind of joy and heartbreak, so well articulated by Steven Levenson’s script.

Wholesome and heartwarming, James & Isey is a film that not only evokes a sense of joy but also invites the audience to reflect on their own relationships and sense of spirituality. There are so many nuggets of wisdom divulged by mother and son duo, James and Isey. Contemplative, heartfelt, reflective. There aren’t many actors who could engage an audience with a role like this as well as Joquain Phoenix can. He has a brilliant way of inhabiting his characters in an authentic and sympathetic way. If his effortless acting performance isn’t enough, the transcendental soundtrack beautifully crafted by indie rock band Arcade Fire is sure to have an impact. With collaborations from bands including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend, this soundtrack is one that has stuck with me and, much like their other discography, creates a sense of quiet poignance in the film.
