As moving and taunting a watch as its reception warned, Joker Folie à Deux was both what I expected from a sequel and not it at all. I can't help but love how far away it dared to fly past genre conventions & expectations, even if its subversion doesn't quite land as smoothly as before. The musical numbers work stylistically moreso than as a narrative choice, although they're still mostly a sight to behold (and listen to). Its discussion on identity in the face of sensationalism limits the film's sense of scale and narrative progression, but its unorthodox approach did evoke many genuine reactions out of me.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom 2023
What a mediocre note to end the current DC era on. Aquaman 2 has no shortage of intriguing ideas, boosting the same eye for worldbuilding and unapologetic reverence to the trippier side of DC that defined the original. But the novelty is gone, and the film overcompensates by doubling down on its predecessor's scattershot narrative and slapstick humor, wasting the potential of its many threads and making it even more apparently so through its spotty editing. If in the mood for simply more Aquaman, you'll probably find it ok, but ending the DCEU on a note this messy only soured any enjoyment I could've otherwise had.

Between Two Dawns 2021
Frustrating for all the right reasons. Between Two Dawns feels both ashamed and depressingly accepting of the hard truths behind the working relationships between employers and employees: how legalities play such a part in it to the point of almost obscuring the human element. I felt for the lead character's journey, his pain upon realizing the scope of his situation how this affects his dreams and life plans. One of the year's most undeservingly ignored gems.

The Father Who Moves Mountains 2021
The negative reviews for this one took me by surprise. I really liked the film. Great directing that never slipped into melodrama territory and believable acting all around. Even if there's little onscreen action, I was always engrossed because the script made every character relatable. I bought into the helplessness of the situation, and I found myself constantly rooting for the main character to succeed, not only on his main quest but on his redemption arc. It may not be the smoothest watch, but it stuck with me for a considerable while after it ended.
