Plodding at times with humdrum war scenes, the film nonetheless has poignant moments - mostly in the sorrowful depiction of subsuming oneself to one’s career to the detriment of familial relationships. It also effectively portrays the myopic ingratitude of pampered children toward the working parent who provides for their material comforts. Note that the title is misleading - Gregory Peck’s suit is black, and probably wool. The best scene is the wife, collapsed in her confectionary pink dress on the manicured lawn in the dark, weeping.
