I'm on a mission to watch all of Keanu Reeves' filmography because he has a soothing energy and that's what I need in my life.

Mad Max 1979
There is something hypnotic about Max's origin story for me. I've seen it several times now and it always grabs me right away and keeps pulling me back in. It's obviously not as high octane, fast moving as the sequels, but the rawness and simplicity of what's going on here just works so well. I'm obsessed with the shots of driving, the changing perspectives from the road, to behind the wheel/handlebars. I also appreciate more and more the fine line of hyper masculine homoeroticism that is inherent to the Mad Max universe. This film franchise is synonymous with the summer for me.

Akira 1988
Beautiful, visceral and heady. I can't believe I never watched this before, it has so many things that I love in it. Post-apocalyptic critique of man's hubris, underprivileged savage youth as the heroes, 80s anime fits. The body horror was a bit too much and the old kids were unsettling but I'm sure that's the point so I wouldn't want them taken out. I certainly recognize the place this holds in film canon and I'm very glad to have it in my vocabulary.

Donnie Darko 2001
I've been wanting to watch this for a long time and I really enjoyed in. Jake Gyllenhaal is captivating. The ambiguousness of the ending and the movie as a whole allows you to take what you want from the themes/message. Is it literal or metaphorical? Either way, it stirs the mind through a wonderful mix of teenage drama and psychological unrest.

Spider-Man 2002
So nostalgic, so dynamic and grounded while also being fantastical and comic book-y. It's just so damn good.
