I wish I watched it more closey in one sitting, but I thought the switching the slow emotional build and the strange cross-cultural reference of being a foreigner/ immigrating to a new land from the perspective of white people in a Japanese city,
I thought the initial scenes in the growing-up section of the progtagnist were really well done. I think the film allowed for a deep level of connection with the lead, but it slowed down for me around the introduction of the war. I think focusing more scenes on what the war did for the main character, would have surged the romantic-interest of the film more fluidly, for me.
I also have seen some looseleaf notes on the film's cultural inaccuracy, which I surely need to look into more as a foreigner myself.
