A stunning and captivating fairy-tale that encapsulates what cinema can be in its ultimate form. An intriguing story about passion and love and the destroying effects of artistic obsession. Also, maybe the movie with the best use of music of any movie I have ever seen, especially the opera sequence in the middle is one of the most enchanting I have ever seen. The visuals in this masterpiece are also out of this world and I think Roger Ebert put it best: “you don't watch it, you bathe in it”. It is an overwhelming spectacle of bizarre absurdism. It is motion pictures at its best.
