Yi Yi 2000
Edward Yang knows how to put his finger right on the pulse of humanity - and Yi Yi is a testament to that. It's a masterfully woven tapestry of love, loss, serendipity, self-sabotage and an exploration of the pervading sense of ennui that shadows us all.
It truly feels like you're watching real, complex, genuine people. I can't emphasise enough the absolute authenticity of the world conjured by Yang, and I've rarely seen such a thing on the screen. We see a world of disappointment, loss, death and chaos - but Yang very delicately shows us these are integral components for us to hope.

Before Sunrise 1995
Yes, this film definitely was a whole different beast the second time round. Especially after having seen the entire trilogy.
I can now safely pass Jesse's pseudo-intellectual immaturity as exactly that. Yes, he isn't completely likeable, but neither am I, and there's something really great about how Linklater has chosen to depict an authentic young guy who thinks everyone's a phony on screen.
What I really enjoy about Before Sunrise is how Jesse and Celine are grappling with the reality…
