I really enjoyed Conclave. The film feels like a very interesting cipher for modern politics since most people would say the Catholic Church as an ancient institution with antiquated internal workings is confusing, but our democratic institutions have shown equal wear and tear, increasingly straining under the pressures of modern society. Ralph Fiennes is fantastic as ever, Stanley Tucci and Sergio Castellitto are brilliant supports. The cinematography is excellent and the pacing is great, it’s a fairly simple but engaging…

Nosferatu was enjoyable and had its great moments. It isn’t the haunting sexual thriller that it’s billed as, the tension and atmosphere of dread are impressively done but I could never quite get into its vibe. The film is a strange meeting of homage to classic vampire films and modern remakes, and perhaps that is why it felt a bit off. I was very impressed by Lily Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard, their performances made the film entertaining throughout. I…

    Dune: Part Two

Far better than the first one, but still too sexy, Dune 2 was better paced and better scripted - but I would’ve liked it weirder. The acting (perhaps because of the script) is better from both Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and Austin Butler was actually really good. Stellan Skarsgard, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardem got even better. The opening sequence with the anti-gravity Harkonnen troops scaling a rock face was visually great, as was much of the film. But the…

    Dune

About as enjoyable a cinematic experience as watching sand dry, Dune was too long with stilted characters and an overly ‘sexed up’ approach to Frank Herbert’s series. The spice must flow but the dialogue and storytelling in this film did not. Visually beautiful except for the godawful rendering of the sand dunes in extended shots during the ornithopter sequence, aesthetic appeal and spectacle cinema couldn’t save this film. Timothee Chalamet plays an angsty teen (go figure), and Zendaya is massively…
