Sliding right into my pantheon of all-time favorite conspiracy thrillers. Jazzy, snappy, sexy and clinical. Doesn’t pull any punches on its technical dialogue and cuts to the chase, regardless of potential audience perception. Prides itself on the strength of social leverage in the world of global intelligence, and turns the head on people being the biggest security exploit. All in all a solid marriage thriller working in the spy genre, a blend thought to be extinct. Soderbergh can put out a movie, tell me “black bag” on the details, and I’ll see it any day of the week.

The catalyst for the most pervasive aspects of our technological society and the surveillance state, the camera, can be changed to be a tool of love. A tool that can conquer fate and even death itself, much more powerful than we can ever know.

Suppressive. Sits on your chest like an elephant and lurches steadily forward like a theme park dark ride on silent echoing rails, each “ka-chunk” of the carts chain pulling you deeper into this world. Purgatorial loops akin to a child padding bleary eyed around the house well past bedtime. Deeply intimate filmmaking that taps into that dragon, imagination, to bring horror slowly to us. Letting us see what we want to see. Deep data-crushed blocky patches of darkness like gaps in the mind like a child’s call with no parental response.

Appeals to the absolute apex of depraved male fantasies: A girl that reads your stuff and likes it.
