  The feeling of monstrousness that comes out of a bad relationship, particularly one where mental illness is involved, is so clearly and bitingly drawn here, that it feels like Cronenberg is really showing his proverbial guts–with some psychoplasmic assistance perhaps? Is the movie a metaphor for its own creation?
