  i’ve finally seen it. call me crazy but i love war books and movies. they ground me in the matter that makes up human existence. part of me wishes i had dedicated my life to the service but truthfully i know that i would be like upham, obsessed with the idea of bonding in those moments of ultimate fear but too cowardly to put others before myself. i liked the emerson quote upham said: “War educates the senses, calls into action the will, perfects the physical constitution, brings men into such swift and close collision in critical moments that man measures man.”
