I feel such an odd kinship to Robert Eggers. We have so many of the same passions, seem to share an ethos, and I sometimes feel imposter syndrome in my own personal life. Heβs my boy. The older I get, the less movies mean to me, which is kind of a shame, because growing up it seemed like they were everything. Now, itβs really rare to feel the thrill of being genuinely surprised by a movie. But Iβll always remember sittingβ¦
This movie is SO AWESOME. Like damn, itβs already an incredibly engaging, thrilling, and dynamic conspiracy thriller (creepily prescient with all the NSA stuff as it came out years before 9/11) with Will at the height of his powers (many years before he ate spaghetti) and Gene Hackman being an absolute boss (as per the usual), but then it has the GALL to climax in a shootout that almost gives the basement scene in Inglourious Basterds a run for itsβ¦
Aight. I'm drawing a line in the sand.
As a society we can either:Β
-continue to lie to ourselves and say this movie is "bad", or whatever...or
-we can all finally come to our senses and admit the undeniable truth that Tim Burton's late-in-the-game masterpiece is one of the most aesthetically beautiful movies to be released this century
When people say sequels are never better,Β just say Values.
