Having loved all Nosferatu renditions I’d seen, and what I’d seen of Robert Eggers’ work, it’s safe to assume I was excited for this film. It disappoints me to say it wasn’t all I’d hoped. Very early on, I understood the story was straying from the original’s blueprint. My issue with the 1979 version ‘Nosferatu the Vampyre’ was how eerily similar the first portion of the film was to the 1922 version. This film, however, had new scenes to discover,…

I spent the majority of this film confused; sure, it was gripping, but what was so spectacular? The introduction of the love interest, simply thrown at you, really cheapened the film in my eyes. The production and performances alone had guaranteed at least a 3.5, but that felt disappointingly average. By the middle, I couldn't see how the film could turn around and earn its 5 stars. Wow—was I wrong. The third act had me floored. Everything made sense; every "flaw" I'd found was planted. I'd been had! It was disgusting, shocking, and undeniably brilliant. Keep your filthy five stars, and don't come back.

    The Monkey

    ★★

I'd picked up on similarities between 'The Monkey' and 'Longlegs' before learning of their shared director. His style is actually quite prevalent in both works; pity I hate it! Anyway, 'The Monkey' attempts to be painfully quirky throughout, resulting in it feeling insufferable. The horror visuals are relatively unique throughout, but the abhorrent narrative safely renders 'The Monkey' as trash.

'M' is ridiculously ahead of its time; it's fascinating. Early films are often notorious for being dull because, despite being so revolutionary in the shaping of modern cinema, the technical aspects of the film and narrative are often sub-par when put in contrast with the films of today. 'M,' however, is no such example of this. It's gripping, expertly crafted, and oddly modern. The New York Times wrote in relation to 'M,' 'It is regrettable that such a wealth of…

    ★★★

'Mickey 17' has that in-your-face public commentary satire that's been on the rise in cinema recently, but like many other films that contain it, it's so shallow it's insufferable. 'Barbie' and 'Saltburn' are examples of this epidemic, among others. This isn't to say that satire is bad, but it's just not well-developed enough here; any attempts at a long-lasting message are lost to common sci-fi adventure film shenanigans. The film's failure in satire could be attributed to the fact it's…

A straightforward film that cleverly tells a theoretically simple story in a shockingly short amount of time. '12 Angry Men' is gripping from the get-go and quickly establishes its characters while managing to subtly develop them all. Overall, the film is incredibly well-paced, cleverly written, and skillfully directed. '12 Angry Men' manages to capture the intensity of the court and legal system to a degree higher than I've ever seen. It taps into what I assumed to be unachievable potential other courtroom dramas can't seem to get close to.
