a great story that i think is hard to fully commit an opinion to without knowing how much is true, which im not sure is possible. a sensational character arc and jeremy strong is phenomenal as a contrast from start to finish. loses steam towards the end, i think as it becomes a bit of a foregone conclusion where it's all headed. there's no real shock to the horrible stuff being done as it's become so normal both in the movie and the real world, which maybe is an interesting thing in itself.

the pacing on this is so impressive, kept me locked in through long, seemingly trivial scenes with sincerely interesting characters and witty, heartfelt dialogue. it is hard not to feel the length, especially i think it dips a bit around the 3/4 mark, but the persistent commentary that comes through as the group interacts with regular hospitality and service workers gives the comedic overtones a sullen, depressing edge. that, combined with the nuance of anora dealing with her own russian…

Lost in Translation 2003
Think this shone best when it wasn’t doing much and gave you that very directionless feeling of being in another country that you might not love. The simple moments where they’re each in the city doing pointless things capture this best. Development of the relationship from platonic to romantic was uneasing for me and slightly forced despite the air of chemistry. Enjoyed the ending for this reason however as it dulled that aspect down for me.
