  Moulin Rouge! is Baz at his most Luhrmann. The director’s tendency towards excess is on full display here, with mostly successful results, especially in his depiction of the dazzling decadence of 1899 Paris. The film’s most unique feature--it’s use of anachronistic music--won’t feel especially fresh to modern audiences but was very inventive when the movie was released in 2001.
