Really good movie. Really good history film. Despite the subject matter, does a great job of not making it about race, just the brutal REALITY of the civil war period. Does it with a REAL life story. Draws you in with the action in the first two thirds but the last portion of the film illuminates the shameful realities of Reconstruction very clearly. I honestly feel that Herzog and and Klaus Kinski capture that schizophrenic nature of what a real Spanish expedition from the Andes to the Amazon in search of El Dorado would have felt like in 1600s. It would have felt like a descent into the Heart of Darkness. It is truly a shame that it had to be dubbed over in German afterwards, and that takes away more of the effect of the atmosphere than I want to admit as it fucks with the sound design. Still, this film is genius, especially considering it’s release date of 1972.
