Free State of Jones 2016
Really good movie. Really good history film. Despite the subject matter, does a great job of not making it about race, just the brutal REALITY of the civil war period. Does it with a REAL life story. Draws you in with the action in the first two thirds but the last portion of the film illuminates the shameful realities of Reconstruction very clearly. Aguirre, the Wrath of God 1972
I honestly feel that Herzog and and Klaus Kinski capture that schizophrenic nature of what a real Spanish expedition from the Andes to the Amazon in search of El Dorado would have felt like in 1600s. It would have felt like a descent into the Heart of Darkness. It is truly a shame that it had to be dubbed over in German afterwards, and that takes away more of the effect of the atmosphere than I want to admit as it fucks with the sound design. Still, this film is genius, especially considering it’s release date of 1972.
