  i did not care for this movie i turned it off 50 minutes in when my legally acquired digital copy started buffering which i took as a sign to stop chasing sunk costs. has the complexion of a disney channel original movie. winced in embarrassment several times. the paul giamatti character was a cartoon with no depth. the da'vine joy randolph character was written by william faulkner in jim crow times. all the characters had very unpleasant voices or else they were poorly acted. did not laugh or even smile once

  the melodrama of this movie and the reputation of it's director have caused people to rate this higher than it deserves i think. never before has an hour and a half felt so much like three hours. decent picture but not worth the huge amount of animal cruelty it likely took to get it made
