As much as I loved the movie's characters, costumes, story, and overall wit, much of my enjoyment of this movie is my enjoyment of Amanda Root's facial expressions. At one point Anne gave an eye roll that was so withering that it nearly knocked me out of the film.

This is probably one of the worst movies that I actually still like. The reasons I do actually like this movie are mostly right there on the poster: Audrey Hepburn and her wonderful, effortless charm. It's a shame, really, that the film lets her down so badly. A director's commentary for a film comprised of a wordless series of images. One would think that would be just relentlessly boring. I mean, imagine a commentary track for Koyaanisqatsi. Now, instead of that film, imagine the film is a collection of nature and religious imagery. This is Razzennest. Except it is also a story about the Thirty Years War, a ghost story, and an incredibly rich audio horror story. I wasn't 100% clear on what was happening when things went from the normal commentary to the supernatural, but once the premise is established, it's a brilliant run to the end.

I'd not heard of Atsuko Okatsuka before. I actually watched this because Tig Notaro directed it (whatever that means in comedy shows). Atsuko's an excellent comedian. She had a light, breezy style that incorporated the audience in ways that were actually funny. I will definitely be looking up her other material.
