1988’s The Blob is, in my opinion, both the extremely rare example of a perfect remake and, even more impressively, a pitch-perfect screenplay in general.

I was really impressed by the sheer amount of deftly seeded foreshadowing in The Blob that I didn’t even realize WAS foreshadowing until each seed eventually bloomed beautifully, again and again, until, before I knew it, the movie was over and I had just taken a stroll through a garden obviously cultivated by a creative team with the…

Cold In July has been one of the most pleasant surprises for me in recent years. It’s the best contemporary movie I’ve seen since Dragged Across Concrete and is absolutely one of my favorites of the 2010’s now, without question.

There are some very special reasons why Cold in July is so remarkable, but nearly all of them involve its gleefully unexpected turns that, on multiple ocassions, essentially reset the movie’s story to a completely different configuration, changing its entire premise and…

Still one of my favorite neo-noirs and possibly my favorite Hackman role. Night Moves subverts a lot of the tropes from these kinds of stories in subtle, fresh ways, and while it does have meta elements, it avoids being an overly self-aware or winking, cute piece (rather than a real deal noir) by keeping the genre’s trademark snappy, clever dialogue and a slightly convoluted, but ultimately engrossing and twisty little mystery at its core.

It takes detours, indulges in random…

“The Emperor's New Clothes” of surrealist films.

Look at the reviews on here. The majority are perfect scores. This is a short film that would be shown in a local filmmaking contest and you'd think "Hey, that was actually pretty neat for a student film. Nicely done. Shows potential."

And yet, again, mostly PERFECT scores on here.

    I’ll repeat.

    Perfect scores.

I hate to start right off the bat using the trendy buzz words of others to describe things I could easily describe with words of my own, but damn it if the internet age’s favorite term for tryhard bad boys, “edgelord”, doesn’t describe director James Gunn to a T. Now, if you know me at all, saying this isn’t necessarily me insulting the man. No, I’ve got plenty of different, more original words for doing that.

    I’ve seen a few…
