Incredibly enough, Emilia Perez managed to surprise me: the film is far worse than I had imagined. The negative criticism it has received is more than justified and, I dare say, even lenient compared to the prejudiced mess projected onto the screen, minute after minute, for over two hours. Watching any Almodóvar film is always a unique experience. It’s simply phenomenal how he manages to combine such realistic stories, ones that everyone can relate to in some way, with dramatic exaggeration that almost flirts with slapstick comedy. Interesting proposal for discussing the idea of love from a female perspective. However, it is overly ambitious. The director fails in executing the task, resulting in a confusing film with poorly constructed characters and clichés that diminish the viewer's engagement. None of the characters feel fully developed, leading to unconvincing actions throughout the story. The exception is Sylvain's sister-in-law, who stands out as the only well-rounded character. The scene depicting Sophia crying on the floor of her apartment is particularly ineffective.

The movie is cool, the story is nice, the editing is surprising, although at times tiring. But honestly, Zendaya doesn’t convince. Her performance is shallow, the character lacks depth, and basically, all she conveys is a certain anger by squinting her eyes—a technique that any teenage drama student could perform. And honestly, the performances of Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor are magnificent, far surpassing Zendaya’s. Both actors manage to deliver well-constructed characters, and the audience can understand, through what is…
