Jennifer Linton Pro

Most of my reviews are for horror films, but occasionally I watch other stuff. Fondness for cult, exploitation, arthouse and the obscure.

Y’know what’s messed-up and scary? Nature. Nature is messed-up and scary.

When the CDC folks pulled up that photo of the giant sea lice — the one where it’s masquerading as a living fish’s tongue — I shuddered with recognition. Have seen that image on the Internet for years. Never Google the word “parasite.”

Great premise and lots of nasty body horror in this found footage film. Highly recommended, just don’t watch prior to a beachside holiday.

I went into the theatre anxious that I'd be disappointed yet again by another overly hyped "scariest movie of the year", and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Most of my anxiety lay with the casting of Nicholas Cage as the titular serial killer. I knew there'd be a high likelihood his performance would be big and bug-eyed crazy, and sometimes that's a creative decision well-suited to the project and other times it's just crazy, campy Nic…

This was like the most intense ABC After School Special episode on “stranger danger”, ever.

I’ve read other Letterboxd reviews that describe this found footage film as poorly made. I dispute that. This was a reasonably well made low budget film with fairly naturalistic performances from its young cast. From a purely horror perspective, however, it takes a very long time (about an hour) for the horror elements to kick into gear. In the meantime, you get to hang out…

Watched the 4K director’s cut which, as it turns out, is 1 minute shorter than the theatrical release. Included the scene that showed Dallas cocooned in xenomorph goop that’s interesting from a lore perspective but definitely slows the action down during the tense and quick paced “Ripley trying to escape on the shuttle” sequence. I can appreciate why it was edited out. The 4K makes the amazing production design look fantastic, but does no favours for the model work on the Nostromo spaceship and some of the composited shots.

As we've all come to expect from a Robert Eggers film, the production value is stratospheric: from the sumptuously detailed sets to the historically accurate costuming, the Gothic allure of the Prague location, to the misty, grey natural lighting that makes every frame resemble a Caspar David Friedrich painting. From that perspective, this is a solid 5-star film.

So why is my rating only 4.5 stars? I'm still sitting with that. There was something that didn't quite land for me.…
