A grandiose film that looks like a thriller thanks to the editing and the suspenseful string music. Just when you think you have it all figured out, Conclave comes up with a surprising twist. In addition, insights into the contentious Catholic Church with former popes such as Benedict XVI, who was in the Hitler Youth, or the cover-up of cases of sexual abuse by Pope John Paul II, make the film captivating.
Great camera work, e.g. the intercut on a procession of white umbrellas.
A beautiful story about the omnipresent scamming of old people, only this time with a completely different outcome. A film with small gestures and a slightly comedic tone that describes the pitfalls of ageing with dignity, grace and genuine humour. Beautiful to watch without being over the top.
A dark work with an outstanding cast. Distressing scenes that linger in the memory for some time. Interesting in detail and visually successful over long stretches, but suffers from a rather weak, meaningless story.
