Fanny and Alexander 1982

At the start of Fanny and Alexander, Ingmar Bergman’s 1982 television movie about two Edwardian Swedish children in the upper-middle-class Ekdahl family, Alexander is playing with his toy theatre. His face appears behind the cardboard proscenium arch. At the end, he lies in his grandmother’s lap, while she reads aloud from a Strindberg play.
In between, Alexander witnesses death and bullying, he is caned by an evil stepfather, is visited like Hamlet by his father’s ghost, and meets an androgynous…

When Harry Met Sally... 1989
It has lost none of its suspense or charm and gained all sorts of pleasures of familiarity with every re-watch. I imagine this is why some people go on holiday to the same place every year. A lusciously bourgeois comedy.
